Paediatric Ward -part 2-

Being posted to paediatric ward again..
This time, much orientated and much more responsibilities..

Each of us is to prepare our own case study, one case per person..
And it seems I'd chosen the 'challenging' one..
Subdural empyema, quite a rare one..
This baby had up to 20 medications..
I slept at 2am in the morning, finishing this case study and woke up at 5am for morning shift later..
Yup, indeed a challenging one..

Anyway, presented quite well on this case..

And so, being in the Paeds ward has it's challenges..
Especially handling uncooperative children in receiving treatment..
There's this 3 year old boy who would struggle to his last breath to escape from nebulizer..
So, my time, we would wrap him up and his mom would be carrying him and I would put the mask on him..
He was also very afraid of nurses..*lol*
This happened for about a week until 2 days ago, he was so good, he sat down quietly and let me put on the neb mask..
And yesterday when my shift was ending, he approached us and give us a handshake..
So cute! He even share with me some bread that he was eating..
How sweet was that??!

That made my day in Peads ward!

Being in the final year..

Being in the final year is exhausting!
Damn, so many things to handle, so little time..

Nursing research is getting on my nerves...
Haha, apparently, my group is the slowest, due to my lazy butt..

Anyway, being in the senior rank is not easy..
The SNs are expecting you to be able to handle the ward..
The CIs are expecting you to know everything.....literally..

Last time, when we head to the ward, my friends and I would look out for any final year seniors to guide us..
Now, we are the ones the juniors are looking for..
~OMG~

Indeed, looking back in those years, I felt I had grown so much!
It still seems like yesterday that I first enter the ward, being so blur..
Less than a year from now, I'll be graduating..

Ironically, there are still things to catch up on even if you graduate..
Life long learning it seems, being a nurse, is not easy..

New semester! Good or bad??

Finally reached sem 5..
Busiest sem ever!

On the first day itself it was already full with assignments!
OMG
Research is the toughest assignment of all time!
And lots of subject to cover this sem!

Subjects for this:
Neurology
Orthopaedics
Otorhinolaryngology
Ophthalmology
Gerontology Nursing
Community Health Nursing
Nursing Research

Seems little but it's heavy!
CHN being the most confusing due to the different groupings and assignments..
And research being the most head cracking subject...

Anyway, looking forward to get over with all the fuss...
Target is to do my best in all!!

End for this semester..

Well, semester 4 officially ended with my last day in Paediatric Ward, last Saturday being quite fun..

Before going to Paeds ward, I was quite fearful as expressed in my previous posts..
Me and one friend of mine, Han Ming, was quite dreadful thinking of children crying non stop..

But to our surprise, it's not as bad as expected!
What's more surprising is, those friends who once dreamt to be working in Paeds ward now dislike it..
Haha..! Although, all of us was quite disorientated at the first few days..

Anyway, being in the ward isn't that stresfull..
The staff nurses were approachable and helpful!
Some were quite funny in their own way..

The patients a.k.a. the children were not as hard to handle as I imagine..
Well of course, sometimes they do cry non stop when giving them nebulizer or when feeding medications..
Other than that, they were quite cute to look after..

There was once when I was taking pulse rate for a  3-4yr old boy when he suddenly hug me!
I was surprised and don't know how to react, but then I hug back...
That was cute!

Then I carry a child for the first time, where he lean on my body...
And taught a 12 year old boy Malay..
Played with a 2 year old girl...
It was kind of fun when thinking back..

Anyway, I did met a 13 year old boy who was suffering from Hydrocephalus..
He had a VP shunt which fail to function properly, and we the nurses are there to take care of him, making him feel comfortable, although mostly what we did was just talk to him..

I realised that emotional support is really needed when communicating with the parents..
They really need all the support they can get..

Looking forward to another posting in Sem 5!!

Finally, sem break!

So, it's been a while..
As you guys know, I'd been posted to O+G ward..
Which is kind of a nice ward..

The staffs there are really nice!
Nothing much I can do there coz it's an 'all ladies' ward..

This 2 weeks' posting, I'd been in to different places.

First to is the Nursery..
I don't know where to begin..
It's a scary ward! I got scared when I went there for orientation of the ward's layout..
I dont know why, but it's a little confusing place to be..

Anyway, the terror starts when I was to bottle feed the babies on my first day, without any supervision from  my CI!!
I was so afraid to handle those 'cute little things'..
Then my CI was like, "you didn't feed anyone? If you dont feed, you dont get your cross"
I was like:

Anyway, my first baby bath was quite successful and the subsequent days, I felt more confident in handling those 'cute little things'..
But still, they were so annoying that they cry non-stop..
I hope to never step into nursery again..

Then it was the Doctor's Clinic
Lin Siew  & I was posted there for like half a day, which half of it was gone coz the doctor went to OT where we're not supposed to follow..
Anyway, later we managed to went to his (Dr. Quah) clinic..
He's quite a friendly one, approachable..
But the time was not enough, at all!

The final unit to complete this posting, Labour Room!!
Been waiting to witness delivery..
But our luck isn't that good!
Me & Calrine fail to observe even 1 instrumental delivery, which was quite disappointing!
Anyway, we enjoyed our posting..

Finally back to the ward, I gave some health education to mothers who had just delivered, encouraging them to breastfeed.
Overall, this posting was great!

After this 2 weeks of  sem break, I'll be going to Peads ward, which I have no idea how I'm going to survive..
Hope for the best!
